Difficult questions

Do angels appear to people today?

← All Bible questions

The Bible shows that God sometimes sent angels to people, and it never says he cannot do so today. Yet Christians are not told to seek angelic encounters or build their faith on them. If someone believes they have seen an angel, they should test the experience by Scripture and by whether it points them to the true gospel of Jesus Christ.

Angels serve God

Angels are not independent spiritual powers or guides for us to summon. Scripture presents them as God’s servants, carrying out his purposes for his people. Hebrews describes them as ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation (Hebrews 1:14).

The Bible includes unmistakable angelic appearances. Gabriel was sent to Mary in Nazareth and told her that she would bear Jesus (Luke 1:26-30). When Peter was imprisoned in Jerusalem, an angel came to him and led him out, though Peter first thought he was seeing a vision (Acts 12:7-11). God can use angels when and how he chooses.

Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?

Hebrews 1:14 (KJV)

Could this happen now?

The New Testament does not say that angelic appearances ended with the apostles. So it would be unwise to say they are impossible today. Still, it gives no command to look for angels, ask for encounters, or judge the strength of faith by extraordinary stories.

Hebrews encourages ordinary hospitality, noting that some people have welcomed angels without knowing it (Hebrews 13:2). That should make us humble rather than fascinated with dramatic claims. God’s care may be striking, but it may also be quiet and unseen.

Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

Hebrews 13:2 (KJV)

Test every message

A spiritual experience can feel very real and still need careful testing. John tells believers not to accept every spirit automatically, but to test spiritual claims (1 John 4:1). The central question is not, “Did it feel powerful?” It is, “Does it agree with who Jesus is and what Scripture teaches?”

Paul gave the Galatian churches a strong safeguard. Even if an angel brought a message, they were to reject it if it changed the gospel they had received (Galatians 1:8). Paul also warns that Satan can appear as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14). No vision, dream, voice, or messenger has authority to rewrite the good news of Christ.

But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

Galatians 1:8 (KJV)

Keep Christ at the centre

If you think you may have encountered an angel, there is no need to panic or rush to tell everyone. Pray, read the relevant Scriptures, and talk with a mature Christian who is steady and trustworthy. Careful discernment is not unbelief. It is obedience.

Angels in the Bible do not ask to become the centre of attention. When John fell before an angel, the angel redirected him to worship God (Revelation 19:10). Whether an experience was angelic, natural, or hard to explain, the safest response is to keep following Jesus and hold firmly to his gospel.
