How is the Trinity not tritheism?

← All Bible questions

The Trinity is not tritheism because Christians do not believe in three separate gods. Scripture insists that God is one, while also showing the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit as distinct and fully divine. The word Trinity is a later Christian label for holding those biblical truths together, without reducing God to one person or dividing him into three gods.

One God, not three

Tritheism means believing in three independent gods. That is not what historic Christian faith teaches. Israel's central confession was that the Lord is one, and the New Testament continues to speak of one God rather than a small group of gods (Deuteronomy 6:4; 1 Corinthians 8:6).

So the Trinity does not begin by counting three divine beings. It begins with God's oneness. Christians confess one God, with one divine nature, not three separate divine natures. This is why the Trinity is not like three people who belong to the same family, or three gods who cooperate with one another.

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord:

Deuteronomy 6:4 (KJV)

Father, Son, and Spirit are distinct

The Bible also makes it difficult to say that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are simply three names for one person acting in different roles. Jesus prays to the Father, speaking of the glory they shared before the world existed (John 17:1-5). That is a real relationship, not Jesus talking to himself.

At Jesus' baptism, the Son is baptised, the Spirit descends, and the Father's voice is heard from heaven (Matthew 3:16-17). Later, Jesus tells his disciples to baptise in the one name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost (Matthew 28:19). The three are distinguished, yet they are named together in a way that belongs to worship and discipleship.

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Matthew 28:19 (KJV)

Each is truly God

The Father is plainly called God throughout Scripture. John opens his Gospel by describing the Word, who became flesh in Jesus, as being with God and also being God (John 1:1; John 1:14). Paul likewise speaks of Christ in terms that point to his full divine identity (Colossians 2:9).

The Holy Spirit is not presented as an impersonal force either. When Ananias lies to the Holy Ghost, Peter says that he has lied to God (Acts 5:3-4). The Spirit speaks and sends people for God's work (Acts 13:2). Christians therefore recognise the Father, Son, and Spirit as fully divine, while still confessing only one God.

A mystery, but not a contradiction

The word Trinity does not appear in the Bible. It is a short way Christians developed to guard what Scripture says: God is one, the Father is God, the Son is God, the Spirit is God, and the Father, Son, and Spirit are not the same person. No single analogy, whether water, an egg, or a three-leaf clover, carries all of that without distorting something.

This does not mean Christians believe one God is three gods, or that God is one person and three persons in the same sense. God is one in his being, and Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are distinct in person. That language reaches the edge of what our minds can map out. Still, it follows the shape of Scripture more faithfully than denying God's oneness or denying the divine identity of the Son and Spirit.

You do not need to solve every mystery before trusting God. Read the passages slowly, notice how they speak about the Father, Jesus, and the Spirit, and let the Bible set the boundaries for your understanding (2 Corinthians 13:14).

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.
