Noah died at 950
Genesis gives a direct answer: Noah lived for 950 years before he died (Genesis 9:29). It is one of the final details recorded about him after the flood and the new beginning God gave his family.
The Bible also says Noah was 600 years old when the waters of the flood came upon the earth (Genesis 7:6). After the flood, he lived another 350 years, which brings the total to 950 (Genesis 9:28-29).
And all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years: and he died.
A life spanning the flood
Noah's years cover an extraordinary stretch of biblical history. He walked with God in a violent and corrupt generation, built the ark in obedience, and saw God preserve his household and the animals through the flood (Genesis 6:9, Genesis 6:22).
When Noah and his family left the ark, God made a covenant with them and with every living creature. The rainbow became its sign, reminding people that God would not again destroy all flesh with a flood (Genesis 9:11-13). Noah's long life meant he lived for centuries after that promise was given.
And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
Why were people so long-lived?
Genesis records very long lifespans for several people before and soon after the flood. Adam lived 930 years, and Methuselah lived 969 years (Genesis 5:5, Genesis 5:27). Noah's 950 years fits that pattern.
The Bible does not stop to explain exactly why these early lifespans were so long. Christians have offered different ideas, but Scripture's main concern is to trace God's dealings with humanity, not to give a scientific account of ageing. Later genealogies show lifespans becoming shorter, with Abraham living 175 years (Genesis 25:7).
Noah's story points beyond his age
Noah's age is striking, but his faithfulness is the heart of his story. Hebrews remembers him as someone who responded to God's warning with reverent trust and acted to save his household (Hebrews 11:7).
His life also shows God's patience and mercy. Peter describes God waiting in Noah's days while the ark was being prepared (1 Peter 3:20). So Noah's 950 years are not merely a remarkable number. They sit within a story of judgement, rescue, covenant, and a God who keeps his word.
By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.
