God and Jesus

If God is omnipresent, then what is special about being in the presence of God?

← All Bible questions

God is present everywhere, so no place lies beyond his knowledge, power, or care. Yet being in God’s presence often means more than sharing the space God sustains, it means personally drawing near to him as he makes himself known, gives peace, convicts, comforts, and leads. The difference is not God moving closer in distance, but a real relationship of attention, welcome, and response.

God is never absent from his world

Scripture is clear that God cannot be contained by a building, a city, or even the heavens. Solomon said this while dedicating the temple in Jerusalem, a place where God had chosen to make his name known in a special way. David also recognised that there was nowhere he could flee from God’s Spirit, whether in heaven, the grave, the sea, or darkness (1 Kings 8:27; Psalm 139:7-10).

So God’s omnipresence means he is not limited by location. Every person lives before him. Paul told the Athenians that God is near to people and that our life itself depends on him (Acts 17:27-28). No lonely room, busy workplace, hospital ward, or hidden thought is beyond him.

Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.

Psalm 139:7-10 (KJV)

Nearness can mean relationship

When the Bible speaks of enjoying God’s presence, it usually means a lived, relational nearness. God is not merely there, like light in a room. A person turns towards him, listens, trusts, prays, and receives what he gives. Moses did not simply want Israel to reach the promised land. He knew that God going with them was what would distinguish them from every other people (Exodus 33:14-16).

That is why this presence is special. It brings rest, guidance, worship, and the assurance that God is with his people in a personal way. God had not been geographically absent from Israel in the wilderness. But his promised presence meant his favour, leadership, and covenant faithfulness among them.

And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.

Exodus 33:14 (KJV)

Sin clouds fellowship, not God’s awareness

Sin does not put someone outside God’s reach. He still sees and knows them. But it does damage fellowship with him. Isaiah told Judah that their sins had created a barrier, described as God hiding his face from them (Isaiah 59:2). That picture is about broken communion, not God losing track of where they were.

This helps make sense of why drawing near matters. James calls believers to come near to God with repentance and humility, and he promises God’s responsive nearness (James 4:8). It is not a technique for making God appear. It is an invitation to stop resisting him and to return openly to the God who is already near.

Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

James 4:8 (KJV)

Jesus opens the way

For Christians, the deepest gift of God’s presence is access to the Father through Jesus. Paul says that both Jew and Gentile have access by one Spirit through Christ (Ephesians 2:18). This is more than feeling calm in prayer, though feelings may be part of it. It is the settled privilege of being welcomed by God because of what Christ has done.

Some days that nearness feels vivid, and other days it may feel quiet or distant. Feelings change. God’s promise does not rest on emotional intensity. You can speak honestly to him, read a psalm slowly, confess what is wrong, and ask for help. The specialness of his presence is that the God who is everywhere invites you to know him.
