God and Jesus

Is God a person?

← All Bible questions

Yes. The Bible presents God as personal: he speaks, knows, loves, chooses, and invites people to know him. God’s divine nature is Spirit, so he is not merely a human creature or limited to a human body, yet the eternal Son truly took on human flesh in Jesus (John 4:24; John 1:14). Christians worship one God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19).

God is personal, not a force

When people ask whether God is a person, they often mean, “Can God know me and relate to me?” Scripture answers yes. God is not an impersonal energy, a useful idea, or a distant power. At the burning bush, he speaks to Moses, reveals his name, and sends Moses to help Israel (Exodus 3:14; Exodus 3:17).

God knows people in particular. David says the Lord examines him closely and knows his thoughts and words (Psalm 139:1-4). God also loves, grieves over evil, shows mercy, and keeps his promises. Those are not the actions of a blind force.

That makes prayer personal. Jesus teaches his disciples to come to God as Father, not because God is a human father, but because he welcomes, cares for, and listens to his children (Matthew 6:9).

O Lord, thou hast searched me, and known me.

Psalm 139:1 (KJV)

God is Spirit and greater than us

Personal does not mean God is simply a bigger version of a human being. Jesus says that God is Spirit (John 4:24). God’s divine nature is not confined by a body, a birthplace, ageing, or the limits of created life.

Scripture contrasts God with human creatures who are changeable and mortal (Numbers 23:19). When the Bible speaks of God’s hand, eyes, or face, it uses familiar human language to help us grasp his power, knowledge, and presence. The Creator cannot be reduced to an image or compared with anything he has made (Isaiah 40:25-26).

Still, God’s greatness does not make him unreachable. The Lord is close to people whose hearts are broken (Psalm 34:18). He is beyond our control, but he is not beyond care.

God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

John 4:24 (KJV)

Jesus shows us God’s heart

There is an essential Christian qualification here. The Son of God did not cease to be God, but he truly became human in Jesus. John says that the Word became flesh and lived among us (John 1:14). So Christians do not say that God is merely human or that the divine nature is limited to a body. They confess that the eternal Son took on a real human body and real human life.

In Jesus, people see God’s character made known in a human life. Jesus says that seeing him is seeing the Father (John 14:9). Paul says that the fullness of the Godhead dwells in Christ bodily (Colossians 2:9). This is why Jesus is central to knowing what God is like: his compassion, truthfulness, holiness, and self-giving love are not a guess about God.

It is a mystery, but not an empty one. God has come near without ceasing to be the holy Creator.

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

John 1:14 (KJV)

One God, known as Father, Son and Spirit

Christians have long summarised the Bible’s teaching by saying that the one God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Jesus gives this threefold name when he sends his followers to baptise people (Matthew 28:19). This does not mean three gods.

The Bible shows real relationship between the Father and the Son. Before his crucifixion, Jesus speaks to the Father about the glory they shared before the world began (John 17:1-5). The Holy Spirit is personal too: he leads God’s children and assures them of their relationship with the Father (Romans 8:14-16).

No simple comparison captures God fully. But you can know this much: God is not lonely, silent, or indifferent. Through Jesus, people are invited to draw near to the Father by the Spirit (Ephesians 2:18).
