Salvation and faith

Is the atonement of Christ unlimited?

← All Bible questions

Many Christians believe Christ’s atoning death was offered for every person, because Scripture speaks of him as the sacrifice for the whole world and as giving himself for all (1 John 2:2; 1 Timothy 2:6). Other Christians believe he died with a particular saving purpose for those God gives to him, pointing to passages about Jesus laying down his life for his sheep (John 10:11). All Christians can agree that Christ’s sacrifice is fully sufficient, salvation is found in him alone, and its saving benefits are received through faith (John 3:16-18).

What does unlimited mean?

The question can mean two different things. It may ask whether Jesus’ death has enough worth to save every human being. Christians across traditions answer yes. The Son of God gave himself, and no sinner is beyond the value or power of his sacrifice.

Or it may ask whom Christ intended to save when he died. Here sincere Christians disagree. Those who hold an unlimited atonement stress Bible passages that speak broadly of the world, all people, and God’s desire that people be saved. Those who hold a definite, or particular, atonement stress that Jesus came to save his people and gave his life for his sheep (Matthew 1:21; John 10:11).

And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

1 John 2:2 (KJV)

Why many see it as offered for all

John says Jesus is the propitiation, meaning the sacrifice that turns away God’s righteous judgment, not only for believers but for the whole world (1 John 2:2). Paul likewise says that Christ gave himself as a ransom for all, in a passage that connects this with God’s saving purpose for humanity (1 Timothy 2:3-6).

Jesus also speaks of God loving the world and giving his Son so that whoever believes may have eternal life (John 3:16). The invitation is not restricted to people who have first proved themselves worthy. Anyone may come. That gives real grounds to tell every person that Christ is a sufficient and willing Saviour.

For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

1 Timothy 2:5-6 (KJV)

Why others speak of a definite atonement

Other Christians notice that Scripture often describes Christ’s death in personal, purposeful terms. Jesus calls himself the good shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep (John 10:11). Paul tells the Ephesian believers that Christ loved the church and gave himself for it (Ephesians 5:25).

From these passages, they conclude that Jesus did not merely make salvation possible, but actually secured the salvation of the people the Father gave him. This view does not deny the gospel should be preached freely to all. It emphasises that Christ’s work truly saves, rather than only creating an opportunity that may never be received.

The shared centre

This debate matters, but the centre is clearer than every detail around it. Jesus died for sins, rose again, and is the only ground of forgiveness and new life (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). Nobody is saved by understanding every aspect of the atonement perfectly. We are saved by God’s grace through faith in Christ (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Scripture also makes clear that Christ’s death does not mean every person is automatically saved. Jesus contrasts those who believe with those who remain in condemnation because they do not believe in him (John 3:17-18). So the right response is not speculation or anxiety. Trust Christ, receive his mercy, and keep reading the passages that lead Christians to these different conclusions.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
