Difficult questions

Is there activity of demonic spirits in the world today?

← All Bible questions

Yes. The Bible presents demonic spirits and spiritual evil as real, but never as equal to God or beyond Jesus’ authority. Christians are called to be watchful without becoming fearful, resisting evil through faith, prayer, truth, and support from other believers (Ephesians 6:12; James 4:7).

What Scripture says

The Bible does not describe demons as superstition or simply another name for human weakness. Jesus met people troubled by unclean spirits and freed them, showing compassion for the person and authority over the evil affecting them (Mark 1:32-34; Mark 1:39). Paul also tells Christians that their deepest struggle is not merely against other people, but involves spiritual forces of evil (Ephesians 6:12).

Still, Scripture does not invite us to blame every painful experience on a demon. People face illness, grief, injustice, temptation, trauma, and the consequences of human choices in a broken world. Care and discernment matter. A difficult situation may call for prayer, but it may also need medical care, counselling, practical help, or all of these together.

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Ephesians 6:12 (KJV)

Alert, but not afraid

Peter urges believers to stay watchful because the devil wants to destroy faith. But he does not tell them to panic. He calls them to stand firm, knowing that they are part of a wider family of Christians who also face suffering and struggle (1 Peter 5:8-9).

Jesus is the centre of the Christian response. When the seventy returned with joy after ministry, Jesus spoke of Satan’s downfall, then turned their attention to the greater security of belonging to God (Luke 10:17-20). Evil is real, but it is not ultimate. Jesus has authority, and Satan does not get the final word.

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

1 Peter 5:8 (KJV)

A steady way to respond

The Bible’s guidance is wonderfully grounded. Draw near to God and resist the devil (James 4:7). Let your mind dwell on what is true, good, and worthy of praise rather than feeding fear (Philippians 4:8). Paul describes God’s armour in terms of truth, righteousness, faith, salvation, God’s word, and prayer, not hidden formulas or dramatic techniques (Ephesians 6:13-17; Ephesians 6:18).

Discernment also helps. John says not every spiritual claim should be accepted uncritically, but tested (1 John 4:1). Paul warns that deception can look impressive or even appear spiritual (2 Corinthians 11:14). Ask whether a message draws people towards the true Jesus, honesty, love, and obedience to Scripture.

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

James 4:7 (KJV)

Don’t carry fear alone

If you are frightened by spiritual concerns, hearing distressing things, or feeling overwhelmed, you deserve gentle care rather than quick labels. Speak with a trusted pastor or mature Christian, and seek medical or mental health support where it is needed. Prayer and professional care do not compete with each other.

The Christian hope is not that life will contain no darkness. It is that Christ is stronger than it. John reassures believers that the One at work in them is greater than the evil at work in the world (1 John 4:4). Keep close to Jesus, stay connected to wise people, and take one faithful step at a time.
