Christian living

Should we, as Christians, watch television (TV)?

← All Bible questions

Christians can watch television, but the Bible calls us to be thoughtful about what fills our minds and shapes our desires. Rather than giving a list of permitted programmes, Scripture points us towards what is true, pure, worthwhile, and loving. The wiser question is often: does this programme help me live faithfully, or is it drawing me away from Christ?

The Bible gives principles, not a TV rule

Television did not exist in the first century, so the Bible never says simply, “watch it” or “avoid it”. Yet that does not leave Christians without guidance. Paul told the Corinthians that not everything they were free to do would actually help them, and that they should not become controlled by anything (1 Corinthians 6:12).

That matters because TV can be a harmless way to rest, laugh, learn, or enjoy a story. It can also quietly take over our time, attention, sleep, relationships, or prayer. The issue is not the screen itself. It is what we take in and whether we remain free to turn it off.

All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.

1 Corinthians 6:12 (KJV)

Pay attention to what it feeds

Paul encourages Christians to set their minds on things marked by truth, honour, purity, loveliness, and moral goodness (Philippians 4:8). That does not mean every story must be cheerful or avoid hard realities. The Bible itself honestly shows grief, violence, betrayal, injustice, and sin. But it does not invite us to delight in evil.

So it is worth asking a few honest questions. Does this programme stir up lust, cruelty, cynicism, greed, fear, or contempt for other people? Am I watching because I enjoy what is degrading? Does it leave me more peaceful and compassionate, or spiritually dull? David spoke of refusing to place a wicked thing before his eyes, which gives a helpful direction for our choices (Psalm 101:3).

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Philippians 4:8 (KJV)

Use freedom with wisdom and love

Christians will draw their lines in different places. One person may be able to watch a crime drama without being troubled, while another knows it feeds anxiety or pulls them back towards old habits. Paul’s teaching about freedom makes room for conscience, while also reminding believers to seek what builds people up rather than merely claiming their rights (1 Corinthians 10:23).

If you live with family, flatmates, or children, love also shapes the decision. What we normalise in a home affects others. Parents have a particular responsibility to guide children rather than leaving them alone with whatever an algorithm offers (Ephesians 6:4). Choosing carefully is not about acting superior. It is about caring for hearts, including your own.

All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

1 Corinthians 10:23 (KJV)

Make room for better things

A good test is fruit. If television regularly crowds out Scripture, prayer, sleep, serving others, conversation, or time with God’s people, it may be asking for more space than it should have. Paul urges believers to use their time carefully because the days are difficult (Ephesians 5:15-16).

You do not need to be frightened of every programme or trapped by guilt over taking an evening to relax. Try choosing rather than drifting. Pick what you plan to watch, notice its effect on you, and turn it off when it is not helping. Ask God for wisdom, and be willing to change a habit if it has begun to master you. Christian freedom is not permission to be shaped by anything. It is freedom to love God and people with a clear heart.
