Difficult questions

What are spiritual beings?

← All Bible questions

Spiritual beings are real beings who belong to the unseen realm rather than the physical world. Scripture speaks of God, who is Spirit, of angels who serve God, and of evil spirits that oppose his good purposes (John 4:24; Hebrews 1:14; Ephesians 6:12). The Bible does not invite fear or obsession with them, but calls people to trust God, test spiritual claims, and stand firm in Christ.

The unseen realm is real

The Bible presents reality as larger than what our eyes can see. God is not a physical creature within the universe. He is Spirit, eternal and holy, and he made both the visible world and things that are invisible to us (John 4:24; Colossians 1:16).

That does not mean spiritual beings are vague forces or simply feelings. In Scripture, they can know, speak, choose, worship, obey, and rebel. Yet they are not equal to God. He is the Creator, while every other spiritual being is part of what he created.

God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

John 4:24 (KJV)

Angels serve God's purposes

Angels are perhaps the spiritual beings people notice most in the Bible. They bring messages, protect and strengthen God's people, worship God, and carry out his commands. The letter to the Hebrews describes them as spirits sent to serve those who will receive salvation (Hebrews 1:14).

Angels are powerful, but they are never meant to take God's place. When John fell before an angel in Revelation, the angel stopped him and directed worship to God alone (Revelation 22:8-9). That is a helpful boundary. Wonder at God's works is good. Worship belongs only to God.

Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?

Hebrews 1:14 (KJV)

Some spirits oppose God

The Bible also speaks plainly about the devil, demons, and unclean spirits. These are not presented as harmless myths. Jesus met people troubled by unclean spirits and freed them with authority, showing both the reality of evil and his greater power over it (Luke 4:33-35).

Evil spiritual beings seek to deceive, accuse, tempt, and damage. Paul says that the deepest struggle behind human evil is not merely against other people, but against spiritual powers of darkness (Ephesians 6:12). Still, Christians need not live frightened. Jesus' victory and authority are central, not the power of evil.

How should we respond?

Scripture does not ask us to chase spiritual experiences, try to contact spirits, or accept every impressive claim. Instead, John urges believers to test spiritual messages by whether they agree with the truth about Jesus Christ (1 John 4:1-3). A spiritual claim is not automatically a trustworthy one.

A steady response is wonderfully ordinary: pray, read Scripture, turn away from evil, stay connected to mature Christians, and trust God. James tells believers to submit themselves to God and resist the devil, rather than trying to face darkness in their own strength (James 4:7).

There is mystery here, and the Bible does not answer every curiosity. But its main message is clear. The unseen world is real, God reigns over it, and those who belong to Christ can live with courage rather than fear.

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
