End times

What are the signs of the end times?

← All Bible questions

Jesus said the period before his return would include deception, conflict, disasters, persecution, growing lawlessness and the worldwide announcement of the gospel. Yet he also warned that these events are not a timetable for predicting a date. The Christian response is steady faith, love, readiness and hope in Christ.

Jesus spoke of real turmoil

Jesus' clearest teaching comes from the Mount of Olives, shortly before his death. His disciples asked about the destruction of the temple and the end of the age, and his answer includes both near events and the larger horizon of his return. That is one reason Christians sometimes differ on how particular details fit together.

He named false messiahs, wars and rumours of wars, famines and earthquakes. These things are serious, but Jesus said they were the beginning of birth pains, not proof that the end has arrived that week (Matthew 24:4-8). A frightening headline may call us to pray and care for people, but it does not give anyone the date of Christ's return.

And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

Matthew 24:6 (KJV)

Deception and pressure are signs too

Jesus particularly warned his followers not to be led astray. Some people would claim special authority or even claim to be the Christ. He also prepared believers for hostility, betrayal and the cooling of love in a lawless world (Matthew 24:9-12).

Paul gave a similar warning to the Thessalonian church. He spoke of a rebellion and of a figure opposed to God, often called the man of lawlessness. Faithful Christians disagree about whether Paul described one future person, a pattern that appears through history, or both. What is clear is that evil can look persuasive, so believers need to test teaching by the gospel rather than chase dramatic claims (2 Thessalonians 2:3-4).

And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.

Matthew 24:11 (KJV)

The gospel will keep going out

End-times teaching is not only about darkness. Jesus said the good news of God's kingdom would be proclaimed throughout the world as a witness to all nations (Matthew 24:14). In the middle of suffering and confusion, God is still drawing people to himself.

That gives Christians something constructive to do. Rather than becoming consumed by speculation, they can pray, speak truthfully about Jesus, serve their neighbours and support the church's witness. The signs Jesus gave are meant to strengthen endurance, not turn faith into a hunt for hidden codes.

And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

Matthew 24:14 (KJV)

Stay ready without living afraid

Jesus said that no one knows the day or hour of his coming. Not even his disciples were given that knowledge (Matthew 24:36). So anyone who announces a precise date goes beyond what Jesus allowed.

Readiness is simpler and deeper than prediction. Jesus calls his people to watchfulness, faithful work and a life shaped by love while they wait (Matthew 24:42-44). Christians can disagree about the sequence of future events, but they share this hope: Christ will return, evil will not have the final word, and God will make all things right.

If end-times news has left you anxious, return to Jesus' words and take one faithful step today. Pray, talk with a mature Christian you trust, and keep reading the passages for yourself. Christian hope is not escape from reality. It is confidence that Christ is Lord within it.
