God is completely holy
Light is one of Scripture’s clearest pictures of God’s character. God has no moral darkness in him, no deceit, cruelty, corruption, or divided motives. He is perfectly good. When Isaiah saw a vision of the Lord in the temple, he became sharply aware of both God’s holiness and his own need for mercy (Isaiah 6:3-5).
This can feel confronting, but it is also reassuring. God never needs to be corrected, never overlooks evil because it is convenient, and never stops being good. His holiness is not cold distance. It is the radiant purity of the One who can truly cleanse and restore people (Isaiah 6:6-7).
This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
God’s light reveals what is true
Light lets us see where we are going. In the same way, God reveals reality: who he is, what sin does, and where life is found. Psalm 119 describes God’s word as guidance for a person’s path (Psalm 119:105). It does not mean every decision will become easy at once. It means God does not leave his people without direction.
God’s light also uncovers what we would rather hide. That is not meant to shame someone who comes honestly to him. John explains that people may avoid the light because their actions are exposed, yet those who practise the truth can come into it openly (John 3:19-21). Real faith includes bringing our failures into God’s presence rather than pretending they are not there.
Jesus brings light into darkness
John opens his Gospel by describing Jesus as the source of life and light for humanity (John 1:4-5). Darkness is real in the Bible. It can describe sin, ignorance, suffering, and separation from God. But darkness does not get the final word.
Jesus called himself the light of the world and promised that those who follow him will not remain lost in darkness, but will have the light of life (John 8:12). Following him is not about becoming flawless overnight. It is learning to trust his truth, turn from what harms us, and walk with him day by day.
Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
Walking in the light
To walk in God’s light means living honestly before him. It includes admitting sin, receiving the cleansing Jesus provides, and choosing what is consistent with God’s character (1 John 1:7-9). Nobody does this by hiding their struggles or earning God’s welcome through performance.
It also changes how believers treat one another. John connects walking in the light with love for fellow Christians, while hatred belongs to darkness (1 John 2:9-10). So this image is wonderfully practical. Seek truth. Confess what is wrong. Receive grace. Love people well. And when life feels dark, keep looking towards the God whose light has not gone out.
