Salvation and faith

What does it mean that salvation is by grace through faith?

← All Bible questions

Salvation by grace through faith means God rescues people as a gift, not as a reward for being good enough. Grace is God's undeserved kindness, and faith is trusting Jesus Christ and relying on what he has done. Good works matter, but they grow from salvation rather than buying it.

Grace is God's gift

Grace means receiving kindness we have not earned. The Bible says every person has sinned and falls short of God's glory, so nobody can stand before God by presenting a perfect record (Romans 3:23). That can sound sobering, but it also means salvation is not reserved for people who seem more religious, disciplined, or put together than everyone else.

God acted first. He showed his love by sending Christ to die for sinners, not for people who had already made themselves worthy (Romans 5:8). Salvation begins with God's mercy and love, not with our effort to climb our way to him.

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Ephesians 2:8-9 (KJV)

Faith means trusting Christ

Faith is more than agreeing that God exists or knowing facts about Jesus. It is placing your trust in him, like relying on a bridge strong enough to carry your weight. Jesus spoke of those who come to him in faith receiving eternal life (John 6:40).

This trust includes turning to Jesus rather than trusting yourself to save yourself. Paul explains that a person is made right with God through faith in Jesus Christ, apart from trying to establish righteousness through the law (Romans 3:21-22). Faith is an open hand, not a spiritual achievement to boast about.

It is not permission to ignore how we live

If salvation is a gift, do good works still matter? Very much. Paul goes on to say that believers are made in Christ Jesus for good works, which God has prepared for them to do (Ephesians 2:10). Works are the fruit of a changed life, not the price of admission.

James makes the same practical point from another angle: faith that never produces any action is lifeless (James 2:17). Genuine trust in Christ gradually shows itself in love, honesty, mercy, repentance, and a desire to obey God. Growth may be slow and uneven, but grace does not leave us where it finds us.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Ephesians 2:10 (KJV)

A gift you can receive

You do not need to clean up every part of your life before coming to Jesus. The tax collector in Jesus' parable simply asked God for mercy, and Jesus said he went home accepted by God rather than the self-confident Pharisee (Luke 18:13-14).

So salvation by grace through faith invites an honest response: admit your need, trust Jesus, and receive his mercy. Christians differ on some details about how faith is expressed in baptism and church life, but they unite around this centre: we are saved because of God's grace in Christ, not because we have earned it.
