Salvation and faith

What does it mean to believe in Jesus?

← All Bible questions

To believe in Jesus means more than agreeing that he existed. It means trusting him as the Son of God and Saviour, relying on his death and resurrection rather than your own goodness to make you right with God. This trust receives his gift of life and begins to reshape how you live.

Trusting a person, not just a fact

In everyday speech, belief can mean accepting an idea as true. Biblical faith includes that, but goes further. To believe in Jesus is to place your confidence in him, in who he is and what he has done. John presents Jesus as God's Son, given so that those who believe in him receive eternal life (John 3:16).

That kind of trust is personal. You are not simply saying, “I think the Christian message is probably right.” You are turning towards Jesus and depending on him. John also describes believing in him as receiving him, with the welcome of becoming part of God's family (John 1:12).

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

John 3:16 (KJV)

Trusting what Jesus has done

Christian faith centres on Jesus' death and resurrection. Paul tells the Roman Christians that salvation involves confessing Jesus as Lord and believing that God raised him from the dead (Romans 10:9-10). Faith is not confidence that you can repair every part of your life first. It rests on Christ.

This is why grace matters. Paul says salvation comes through faith as God's gift, not as a reward someone earns. Yet he goes on to say that God's people are made for good works, so changed living follows grace rather than purchases it (Ephesians 2:8-10).

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Romans 10:9 (KJV)

Faith shows up over time

Real faith is not flawless performance. Doubts may come, old habits can take time to change, and growth is often uneven. Still, trusting Jesus makes a difference. If you trust a doctor, you take the medicine. If you trust Christ, you begin learning his way, asking forgiveness when you fail, and letting his words shape your choices.

James makes a bracing point: even evil spirits know certain facts about God. So saving faith is more than correct information held at a distance (James 2:19). It is a living trust that turns the heart towards Jesus.

A simple place to begin

You do not need polished religious words. You can come honestly to Jesus, acknowledging your need, trusting his mercy, and asking him to lead you. The man who asked Jesus for help admitted both his faith and his struggle, and Jesus did not turn him away (Mark 9:24).

Keep reading one of the Gospels, perhaps John or Mark, and notice what Jesus says and does. Believing in him is not a one-off formula. It is the beginning of knowing, trusting, and following him.

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
