Difficult questions

What is a kundalini spirit?

← All Bible questions

The Bible does not mention a “kundalini spirit”, so Christians should be careful not to treat the phrase as a biblical diagnosis. Kundalini is a term from Indian religious traditions, often connected with spiritual energy and awakening practices. Scripture calls believers to test spiritual claims, avoid divination and practices that draw them away from God, and look to Jesus rather than fear.

The term is not in the Bible

You won't find the words “kundalini” or “kundalini spirit” in Scripture. The term comes from Indian religious traditions and is commonly used for an alleged spiritual energy associated with awakening, bodily sensations, altered states, or religious practice. Because the Bible does not name it, Christians should avoid speaking as if it gives a clear, biblical category for every unusual experience.

That doesn't mean spiritual questions are unimportant. The Bible takes the unseen world seriously. Yet it points people away from seeking hidden power, fortune-telling, or spiritual control. In Ephesus, people who had practised magic turned from those practices when they came to faith in Christ (Acts 19:18-19).

Test what you hear and experience

John wrote to believers who faced competing spiritual messages. His instruction was not to panic, but to test them by their relationship to Jesus Christ and the apostolic gospel (1 John 4:1-3). Paul also describes discernment of spirits as a gift God gives within the church, not as a licence to make quick accusations about other people (1 Corinthians 12:10).

Strong feelings, shaking, tears, peace, fear, or physical sensations do not by themselves prove that a spirit is present. Our bodies and emotions can respond intensely for many reasons. A wiser question is: does this practice lead me towards trusting and obeying Jesus, or does it invite me to seek power, secret knowledge, or spiritual experiences apart from him?

Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

1 John 4:1 (KJV)

Jesus brings freedom, not fear

The New Testament shows that evil spiritual influence is real, but it does not tell Christians to live frightened or obsessed with identifying spirits. Jesus has authority over unclean spirits, and his followers belong to the One who is greater than the powers opposed to God (Mark 1:27; 1 John 4:4).

If you have been involved in kundalini practices, energy work, meditation aimed at spiritual awakening, or another practice that now troubles your conscience, you can bring that honestly to God. Turn towards Christ in prayer, step away from what seems to compete with him, and speak with a mature pastor or trusted Christian. God's invitation is not shame, but forgiveness and a new life shaped by his Spirit (1 John 1:9; Galatians 5:16).

Take a calm, practical next step

You don't need to label yourself or someone else as having a “kundalini spirit” in order to seek help. If an experience is causing distress, confusion, sleeplessness, or frightening physical symptoms, talk with both a trusted church leader and an appropriate health professional. Seeking medical care does not show a lack of faith.

Keep your focus simple. Read the Gospels, pray directly to God through Jesus, and stay connected to believers who can help you grow in truth and love. God's Spirit produces a life marked by love, joy, peace, patience, and self-control, rather than pressure to chase dramatic experiences (Galatians 5:22-23).

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
