Prayer

What is intercessory prayer?

← All Bible questions

Intercessory prayer is praying to God on behalf of another person, community, or situation. Christians bring others' needs before God because he invites his people to pray, and because Jesus himself intercedes for those who come to him. It can be as simple as asking God to give a friend strength, wisdom, healing, faith, or peace.

Praying for someone else

To intercede means to step in and plead for someone else. In prayer, that means turning your attention towards God while carrying another person's need before him. You may pray for a sick neighbour, a child who has wandered, leaders making difficult decisions, or people caught in war and injustice.

The Bible gives a clear invitation to pray this way. Paul urged Timothy's church to make prayers, requests, and thanksgivings for all people, including rulers and those in authority. Intercession is not about controlling another person's choices. It is an act of love and trust, placing them in God's care.

I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;

1 Timothy 2:1 (KJV)

Jesus is the greatest intercessor

Jesus shows what intercession looks like at its deepest. On the night before his crucifixion, he prayed not only for his first disciples but also for those who would later believe through their message. He wanted them to be kept in faith and drawn together in love, as John 17:20-21 shows.

The New Testament also says that the risen Jesus lives to make intercession for his people. So Christian prayer does not depend on finding perfect words. Those who trust Christ come to God through him, confident that he understands their weakness and brings them before the Father.

Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

Hebrews 7:25 (KJV)

Biblical examples

Moses prayed for Israel after the people made the golden calf, asking God to show mercy rather than destroy them. Samuel considered it wrong to stop praying for Israel. Paul regularly told churches that he prayed for their spiritual growth, wisdom, love, and endurance. These prayers were honest and specific, rooted in God's character and promises.

Intercession can also include praying for people who are difficult to love. Jesus told his followers to pray for those who mistreat them. That does not excuse harm or require anyone to stay in danger. It means bringing even painful relationships to God, who sees clearly and judges rightly.

But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

Matthew 5:44 (KJV)

How to begin

Start with what you know. Name the person and their real need: "God, give Priya courage for her appointment", or "Please provide work for Daniel and help him not lose hope." You can ask for healing, but also for wisdom, daily provision, protection, reconciliation, repentance, and a deeper knowledge of God.

You don't need to carry every burden alone. Tell a trusted Christian friend or church community about needs that can be shared appropriately, and keep praying even when the answer takes time. James encourages believers to pray for one another. God hears, and he invites you to bring people to him with both confidence and humility.
