Church and practice

What is the church?

← All Bible questions

In the Bible, the church is not mainly a building or a weekly event. It is the people who belong to Jesus Christ, gathered by faith and joined together as his body. Churches meet locally in many places, yet all believers are connected to Christ and called to worship, learn, love, serve and share the good news.

A people called by Jesus

Jesus first spoke of building his church while speaking with Peter near Caesarea Philippi. The word translated church is ekklesia, a Greek word for an assembly or gathering. So the church is first of all people, not bricks, a brand name or a religious club (Matthew 16:18).

That matters because a church can meet in a house, a school hall, a cathedral or under a tree. The place may be useful, but it is not the church itself. People become part of Christ's church through trusting him, not through owning a certain kind of building.

And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Matthew 16:18 (KJV)

Christ is the head

Paul describes believers as Christ's body. A body has many parts, and each part matters. No Christian is meant to carry everything alone, and no person's gifts are too small to offer. Christ directs his people as the head, while believers belong to one another (1 Corinthians 12:12-14; Ephesians 1:22-23).

This picture also makes room for real difference. Christians have different backgrounds, abilities and roles, but they share one Lord. The church is strongest when it honours Jesus rather than treating one personality, tradition or preference as central.

And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.

Ephesians 1:22-23 (KJV)

A local gathering and a wider family

The New Testament speaks of particular congregations, such as the church at Corinth, where Paul addressed a community with both gifts and serious problems (1 Corinthians 1:2). A local church is a real group of believers who know one another, pray, learn Scripture and practise love in ordinary life.

Yet the church is wider than any one congregation or denomination. Paul says that those who were once strangers can become members of God's household, built together as a dwelling place for God (Ephesians 2:19-22). Faithful Christians differ on some practices and structures, but they can still recognise that Jesus has one people.

Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

Ephesians 2:19-22 (KJV)

What the church does

After Pentecost, the first believers devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching, fellowship, breaking bread and prayer. They also shared with people in need and praised God together (Acts 2:42-47). Those patterns still give a helpful picture of church life. It is a place to be formed by God's word and to put love into practice.

A healthy church will not be perfect. The churches in the New Testament needed correction, patience and forgiveness. Still, gathering with other believers can help you follow Jesus when faith feels confusing or lonely. If you are looking for a church, look for a community that centres on Christ, teaches Scripture carefully, welcomes people honestly and grows in love (John 13:34-35).
