What is the glory of God?

← All Bible questions

The glory of God is the radiant display of who God is, his holiness, goodness, power, beauty, mercy, and truth. Scripture shows God’s glory in creation, in his acts of rescue and judgement, and most clearly in Jesus Christ. It is not merely a bright light or a feeling, though God’s presence can be described that way, but the weight and splendour of his character made known.

God's glory is his greatness made visible

When the Bible speaks of God’s glory, it is talking about the honour, splendour, and importance that belong to him alone. The Hebrew word often behind “glory” is kabod, which carries the idea of weight or substance. God is not small, casual, or one option among many. He is the Creator, and everything else depends on him.

Sometimes that glory is seen in breathtaking ways. Israel saw God’s presence filling the tabernacle, and later the temple, so powerfully that people could not simply carry on as normal (Exodus 40:34-35; 1 Kings 8:10-11). Yet God’s glory is more than visible radiance. It is the reality of God himself, revealed in a way people can recognise.

The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.

Psalm 19:1 (KJV)

His glory includes his goodness and mercy

Moses asked God to show him his glory during a difficult season for Israel. God answered by making his goodness pass before Moses and declaring his own name and character (Exodus 33:18-19). That moment helps us see what glory means: God’s greatness is not cold force. His holiness shines together with compassion, patience, mercy, truth, and justice.

God does not hide the hard parts of his character. He forgives sin, but he does not pretend evil does not matter (Exodus 34:6-7). His glory is beautiful because he is perfectly good. He is merciful without being careless about wrong, and righteous without being cruel.

And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.

Exodus 34:6-7 (KJV)

Jesus shows God's glory most clearly

For Christians, Jesus is the clearest revelation of God’s glory. John says that the eternal Word became human and lived among us, and that people saw his glory in him (John 1:14). Jesus did not merely talk about what God is like. In his compassion for the sick, welcome of outsiders, truthfulness with sinners, and willing death, he made the Father known.

Hebrews describes the Son as the brightness of God’s glory and the exact expression of his person (Hebrews 1:3). So when you want to understand God’s heart, look closely at Jesus. His glory is seen not only in miracles and resurrection power, but also in humble love as he gives himself for others (John 13:3-5).

Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

Hebrews 1:3 (KJV)

Living for God's glory

Giving glory to God means responding to him as he truly deserves. It includes worship and praise, but it also reaches ordinary life. Paul tells the Corinthian Christians that even eating and drinking can be done in a way that honours God (1 Corinthians 10:31). Your work, speech, choices, generosity, and care for neighbours can point beyond yourself to him.

This is not a demand to perform perfectly so God will accept you. God’s glory changes people as they turn towards him. Paul describes believers being transformed as they behold the Lord’s glory (2 Corinthians 3:18). Start simply: read one Gospel scene, notice what Jesus reveals about God, and thank him for that part of his character.
