Church and practice

What is the importance of Christian unity?

← All Bible questions

Christian unity matters because Jesus prayed that his followers would be one, so that the world might recognise that the Father sent him (John 17:21). It helps the church grow in love, bear one another’s burdens, and serve with its different gifts rather than competing (Ephesians 4:15-16). Unity does not mean pretending every difference is unimportant, but holding firmly to Christ and treating fellow believers with humility and patience (Ephesians 4:2-6).

Jesus made unity part of his prayer

On the night before his crucifixion, Jesus prayed not only for the disciples gathered with him, but for those who would later believe their message. He asked that they would be united in a way that reflects the relationship between the Father and the Son (John 17:20-21). That makes unity more than a pleasant church atmosphere. It is part of the witness Jesus wants his people to give.

When Christians forgive, listen, pray, and work together across real differences, they show something of Christ’s reconciling love. A divided church can still speak true words, but needless hostility makes those words harder for others to hear (John 13:35).

That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

John 17:21 (KJV)

One body, many members

Unity is not sameness. Paul pictured the church as one body with many members, each needed and each given a place by God (1 Corinthians 12:12-14). One person may serve quietly, another may teach, another may offer practical care. Their gifts differ, but they belong to the same Lord.

That picture leaves little room for rivalry. In Corinth, believers were dividing themselves around favourite Christian leaders, and Paul called them back to the fact that Christ is not divided (1 Corinthians 1:10-13). Christian unity means refusing to make personalities, status, preferences, or factions more central than Jesus.

For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.

1 Corinthians 12:12 (KJV)

Unity grows through humble love

Unity takes work because people are different, and churches include imperfect people. Paul urged the Ephesian believers to practise lowliness, meekness, patience, and forbearance in love as they guarded the unity God had given them (Ephesians 4:2-3). Those are very practical qualities. They mean slowing down before assuming the worst, admitting wrong, and making room for someone else’s weakness.

This does not mean avoiding every difficult conversation. It means speaking truth in love, with the aim that the whole body becomes healthier and more mature in Christ (Ephesians 4:15-16). Sometimes reconciliation requires an honest apology. Sometimes it means choosing not to keep score.

Unity has a centre

Faithful Christians do not agree on every question of church practice or interpretation. Some differences are handled differently in different traditions. Yet Paul grounds Christian unity in shared realities: one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father (Ephesians 4:4-6). Jesus is the centre.

So unity is not asking Christians to abandon truth for peace. The early believers tested teaching against Scripture, rather than accepting every claim without thought (Acts 17:11). Christians can seek conviction and clarity while still showing honour, gentleness, and love to those who belong to Christ. That kind of unity is worth praying for and practising in ordinary life.

There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
