Salvation and faith

What is the meaning of spiritual rebirth?

← All Bible questions

Spiritual rebirth means receiving new life from God, not merely improving yourself or adopting religious habits. Jesus described it as being born again, or born from above, through the work of God’s Spirit and faith in him. It brings a new relationship with God and begins a lifelong process of becoming more like Christ.

Jesus spoke of a new beginning

The clearest conversation about spiritual rebirth happens at night, when Nicodemus, a respected Jewish teacher, comes to Jesus with questions. Jesus tells him that seeing God’s kingdom requires being born again (John 3:3). Nicodemus first hears this as a physical second birth, which shows how surprising Jesus’ words were.

The Greek word behind born again, anothen, can carry the sense of both again and from above. Jesus is speaking about a birth that comes from God. Spiritual rebirth is not something a person can manufacture through effort, family background, knowledge, or good intentions.

Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

John 3:3 (KJV)

It is the Spirit’s work

Jesus explains that this new birth involves water and the Spirit (John 3:5-6). Christians have understood the water phrase in different ways. Some connect it closely with baptism, while others see it as pointing to the cleansing and renewal God promised. All agree that the new birth itself is God’s work, not a human achievement.

Long before Nicodemus, God promised to give his people a clean heart and put his Spirit within them (Ezekiel 36:26-27). Jesus compares the Spirit’s work to the wind. You cannot control or fully trace it, but its effects become real and visible (John 3:7-8).

Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

John 3:5-6 (KJV)

New life comes through Christ

Spiritual rebirth begins with receiving Christ in faith. John says those who receive him and believe in his name become God’s children, born by God’s will rather than by ordinary human descent or decision (John 1:12-13). This is grace, God giving what we could not earn.

Paul makes the same point when he says that salvation comes through God’s mercy and renewing work, not because we have done enough righteous things (Titus 3:5). Faith is not a payment that buys new life. It is trusting the One who gives it.

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

Titus 3:5 (KJV)

It changes a person over time

Being spiritually reborn does not mean you instantly become flawless or never struggle again. It means your deepest identity has changed. In Christ, Paul says, a person is made new (2 Corinthians 5:17). New desires, repentance, love for God, and growing care for others can become signs of that new life.

There may be quiet seasons, hard questions, and real battles with old patterns. Still, the heart of spiritual rebirth is wonderfully simple: God welcomes people into his family through Jesus, then continues his renewing work in them. If you are exploring this, read John 3 slowly and bring your questions honestly to God.
