What is the significance of Hezron in the Bible?

← All Bible questions

Hezron is the name of two Israelite men in the Bible. One was a son of Reuben, while the other was a son of Perez from Judah’s tribe. The Hezron descended from Perez matters especially because his family line leads to King David and is included in the genealogy of Jesus Christ.

Two men named Hezron

The Bible uses Hezron for two different people, which can feel confusing at first. One Hezron was among the sons of Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, when Jacob’s family went down into Egypt (Genesis 46:9). His descendants became one of the families within the tribe of Reuben, called the Hezronites (Numbers 26:6).

The better-known Hezron was a son of Perez, who was the son of Judah and Tamar (Genesis 46:12). This places him in Judah’s tribe, the tribe from which Israel’s royal line would later come. The shared name does not mean they were the same person.

And the sons of Judah; Er, and Onan, and Shelah, and Pharez, and Zerah: but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. And the sons of Pharez were Hezron and Hamul.

Genesis 46:12 (KJV)

A link in Judah’s family line

Hezron from Judah’s tribe is significant because Scripture carefully preserves his place in a family line that carries forward God’s promises. The book of Ruth names Perez, Hezron, Ram, Amminadab, Nahshon, Salmon, Boaz, Obed, Jesse and David in order (Ruth 4:18-22). Hezron is not presented as a king or prophet. Yet his place in the line matters.

Genealogies can look like lists of unfamiliar names, but they show that God worked through real families over many generations. David did not appear out of nowhere. His story stands within Judah’s long history.

Part of David’s ancestry

First Chronicles also traces Judah’s family through Perez and Hezron (1 Chronicles 2:5). It goes on to describe branches of Hezron’s household and their descendants (1 Chronicles 2:9). These records helped Israel remember its tribal identity, family inheritance and connection to the line of David.

For ancient Israel, ancestry was not simply private information. It connected people to the Lord’s covenant people and to the story God was unfolding. Hezron’s name is one small but steady thread in that larger story.

And Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed, And Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David.

Ruth 4:21-22 (KJV)

Included in Jesus’ genealogy

Matthew includes Hezron in Jesus’ family line, naming him between Perez and Ram (Matthew 1:3). Luke’s genealogy also includes him in the ancestry of Jesus (Luke 3:33). These accounts underline that Jesus entered human history within the promised line of Judah and David.

So Hezron’s significance is not that the Bible records many personal events from his life. It is that his name witnesses to God’s faithfulness across generations. A person briefly named in Scripture can still have a meaningful place in the path that leads to David, and ultimately to Christ. Reading the surrounding genealogies slowly can help you see that bigger story.

And Judah begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram;
