What is the significance of Tekoa in the Bible?

← All Bible questions

Tekoa was a town in Judah remembered for the people and events connected with it. It appears in Rehoboam’s fortified cities, as the home of a wise woman used by Joab, and especially as the hometown of the prophet Amos. Scripture also links Tekoa with Jeremiah’s warning call and with workers who helped rebuild Jerusalem’s wall.

A fortified town in Judah

Tekoa appears among the cities King Rehoboam strengthened after the kingdom divided. Situated in Judah, it formed part of a network of defended towns during a fragile time for the southern kingdom (2 Chronicles 11:6).

That setting gives Tekoa a practical significance. It was not merely a name on a map. It stood in a region where Judah needed vigilance, courage, and readiness.

He built even Beth–lehem, and Etam, and Tekoa,

The wise woman from Tekoa

Tekoa is first named in Scripture through a wise woman whom Joab brought to David. Joab gave her a carefully planned role, asking her to approach the king with a story that would make him consider his broken relationship with Absalom (2 Samuel 14:1-2).

Her appeal spoke of mercy and of finding a way for someone banished not to remain far away. David recognised that Joab was behind the conversation, then permitted Absalom to return to Jerusalem, though their relationship was still far from healed (2 Samuel 14:12-14; 2 Samuel 14:21-24). The episode does not make Tekoa a centre of prophecy, but it does associate the town with wise and searching speech at a painful moment in David’s family.

Then the woman said, Let thine handmaid, I pray thee, speak one word unto my lord the king. And he said, Say on. And the woman said, Wherefore then hast thou thought such a thing against the people of God? for the king doth speak this thing as one which is faulty, in that the king doth not fetch home again his banished. For we must needs die, and are as water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; neither doth God respect any person: yet doth he devise means, that his banished be not expelled from him.

2 Samuel 14:12-14 (KJV)

The home of Amos

Tekoa is most closely connected with Amos. The book that bears his name introduces him as one of the herdsmen of Tekoa, before recording his visions concerning Israel and the surrounding nations (Amos 1:1). Amos later describes his working life as a herdsman and a tender of sycomore fruit before the Lord sent him to speak to Israel (Amos 7:14).

This matters because Amos came from a small Judean town yet brought God’s message to the prosperous northern kingdom. He challenged worship that ignored oppression and called God’s people to let justice and righteousness shape public life (Amos 5:24). Tekoa reminds us that God often calls ordinary people from overlooked places to speak truth with courage.

The words of Amos, who was among the herdmen of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.

Amos 1:1 (KJV)

A place of warning and rebuilding

Jeremiah named Tekoa when warning Judah about coming danger. He called for the trumpet to be sounded there, making the town part of an urgent summons for people to recognise the threat approaching Jerusalem (Jeremiah 6:1). Its place among Judah’s defended towns makes that image especially fitting.

After the exile, the people of Tekoa helped repair Jerusalem’s wall. Their nobles would not take part, yet other Tekoites repaired one section and then worked on another as well (Nehemiah 3:5; Nehemiah 3:27). That small detail carries a hopeful lesson. When others refuse to help, faithful people can still take up the work of rebuilding.

After them the Tekoites repaired another piece, over against the great tower that lieth out, even unto the wall of Ophel.
