Salvation and faith

What is the true gospel?

← All Bible questions

The true gospel is the good news that Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again, so that people can be forgiven and brought to God through faith in him (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). It is God's gift of grace, not a reward earned by religious effort, good behaviour, or having a perfect past (Ephesians 2:8-9). Jesus calls us to turn to God and trust him.

Good news centred on Jesus

The word gospel comes from the Greek word euangelion, meaning good news. At its heart, the gospel is not mainly advice about becoming a better person. It is news about what God has done through Jesus.

Paul gave a clear summary to the Christians in Corinth: Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose from the dead. His death dealt with the reality of human sin, and his resurrection shows that death did not have the final word (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). This is the centre. If Jesus' death and resurrection are removed, something essential has been lost.

For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

1 Corinthians 15:3-4 (KJV)

Why we need this good news

The Bible is honest about us. Sin is more than making a few mistakes. It is our turning from God in thought, desire, word, and action. Paul says that everyone has sinned and fallen short of God's glory (Romans 3:23). We cannot repair that separation simply by trying harder.

Yet God did not leave people to carry their guilt alone. He showed his love by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners (Romans 5:8). The gospel begins with God's mercy, not with our ability to make ourselves acceptable.

But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5:8 (KJV)

Received by grace through faith

The gospel is received, not achieved. Ephesians says salvation comes by grace through faith and is not something anyone can boast about (Ephesians 2:8-9). Grace means God's undeserved kindness. Faith means relying on Jesus, trusting who he is and what he has done, rather than trusting yourself.

Jesus announced God's kingdom and called people to repent and believe the gospel (Mark 1:15). Repentance is not pretending you will never fail again. It is a real turning of the heart and life towards God. Faith and repentance belong together: we turn from self-rule and place our trust in Christ.

Not a different message

The true gospel does not say that God will accept us because we are successful, healthy, moral enough, or religious enough. Nor does it say that faith gives permission to carry on without change. God saves freely, and that grace begins to reshape the people he saves (Titus 2:11-12).

Paul warned the churches in Galatia not to accept a different gospel, because adding human requirements as the basis for being accepted by God changes the message of grace (Galatians 1:6-7). Christians may disagree about some secondary questions, but Jesus' saving death, resurrection, and the gift of salvation through faith remain central.

If you want to respond, speak honestly to God. Trust Jesus with your sin, your past, and your future. Then keep reading the Gospels, especially Mark or John, to meet Jesus more clearly in Scripture.
