What was Solomon’s Porch?

← All Bible questions

Solomon’s Porch was a well-known covered colonnade, or walkway, in the temple area at Jerusalem. Jesus walked there during the Feast of Dedication, and it later became a place where Peter spoke about Christ and the early believers gathered. Scripture names it after Solomon, though it does not explain exactly why it bore that name.

A place in the temple

Solomon’s Porch was part of the temple complex in Jerusalem. The Greek word translated “porch” is stoa, meaning a covered colonnade or sheltered public walkway. It was a natural place for people to walk, meet, listen, and talk in the busy temple courts.

The Bible calls it Solomon’s Porch, but it does not give a detailed architectural description or tell us exactly why it was connected with Solomon’s name. So it’s wisest not to claim more than Scripture says. What is clear is that it was a recognised meeting place at the temple.

And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon's porch.

John 10:23 (KJV)

Jesus walked there

John places Jesus in Solomon’s Porch during the Feast of Dedication, a winter festival remembered today as Hanukkah. While he was there, people gathered around him and pressed him to say plainly whether he was the Christ, God’s promised King (John 10:22-24).

That setting matters. Jesus did not teach only in private homes or quiet places. He spoke openly in the temple, where ordinary worshippers and religious leaders could hear him and respond.

And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter. And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon's porch.

John 10:22-23 (KJV)

Peter preached there after a healing

After Peter and John healed a man who had been unable to walk, the man held on to them as people rushed together at Solomon’s Porch (Acts 3:6-11). Peter used that moment to point beyond the miracle to Jesus. He told the crowd that the healing came through faith in Christ, not through Peter’s own power or holiness (Acts 3:12-16).

It became a place where a visible act of mercy opened the way for clear teaching about Jesus. The miracle drew a crowd, but Peter’s aim was to help them turn to the risen Christ.

And as the lame man which was healed held Peter and John, all the people ran together unto them in the porch that is called Solomon's, greatly wondering.

Acts 3:11 (KJV)

A gathering place for the first believers

Solomon’s Porch appears again in Acts as a regular gathering place for the apostles and the growing church. Acts describes many signs taking place through the apostles and says the believers were together there with one purpose (Acts 5:12).

So Solomon’s Porch was more than a feature of an ancient building. In the Gospel of John, it was a place where Jesus was questioned. In Acts, it became a place of healing, witness, shared faith, and courage. Its story invites us to see that God can use ordinary public spaces for honest questions and life-changing truth.
