Where was Ur of the Chaldees?

← All Bible questions

Ur of the Chaldees was the place Abraham’s family came from before they travelled towards Canaan. Most historians identify it with the ancient city of Ur in southern Mesopotamia, near the Euphrates River in present-day Iraq. The Bible does not give modern coordinates, but it highlights Ur because God called Abraham away from his old country and into a life shaped by God’s promise.

Ur was Abraham’s family home

Genesis first names Ur in the story of Terah’s family. Haran, Abram’s brother, died in Ur of the Chaldees. Then Terah left Ur with Abram, Sarai, and Lot, intending to go to Canaan, but the family settled for a time in Haran instead (Genesis 11:28, 31).

Later, God reminded Abram that he had brought him out of Ur of the Chaldees in order to give him the land of Canaan (Genesis 15:7). So Ur was not the promised land. It was the familiar place Abram left behind.

And he said unto him, I am the Lord that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to give thee this land to inherit it.

Genesis 15:7 (KJV)

The usual modern location

Most scholars identify biblical Ur with an ancient city in southern Mesopotamia, now called Tell el-Muqayyar. It stood near the Euphrates River in what is now southern Iraq. This was a significant city in the ancient world, with long-distance trade, farming supported by irrigation, and impressive temples.

Mesopotamia means the land between rivers, especially the Tigris and Euphrates. The Bible itself does not provide a modern map reference or describe Ur’s exact ruins. Its identification with the southern city comes from archaeology and ancient historical records, not from a verse that gives latitude and longitude.

Why some people discuss another location

A smaller number of scholars have suggested a location farther north in Mesopotamia, partly because Terah’s family later stopped at Haran, in the region of modern south-eastern Turkey. The question is not completely closed from an archaeological point of view.

Still, the southern Mesopotamian Ur remains the most widely held identification. Whatever route the family took, Scripture is clear about the larger movement: Terah began the journey from Ur towards Canaan, and Abram eventually went on as God directed him (Genesis 11:31; Genesis 12:1-4).

Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee:

Genesis 12:1 (KJV)

Why Ur matters in the Bible

Ur matters less as a destination for pilgrims and more as the starting point of Abraham’s faith. Nehemiah remembers God choosing Abram, bringing him out of Ur, and making a covenant with him (Nehemiah 9:7-8). Stephen likewise says that God appeared to Abraham in Mesopotamia and called him to leave his country and family setting (Acts 7:2-3).

That makes Ur a reminder that God’s promises began before Abraham reached Canaan. Abraham did not have every detail in front of him. He responded to the God who called him. Reading Genesis 11 through 12 is a good way to see both the geography and the personal trust at the heart of the story.

Thou art the Lord the God, who didst choose Abram, and broughtest him forth out of Ur of the Chaldeans, and gavest him the name of Abraham;

Nehemiah 9:7 (KJV)
