End times

Who is the false prophet of the end times?

← All Bible questions

The false prophet is a figure in Revelation who supports the beast, performs deceptive signs, and pressures people to worship the beast rather than God. Revelation does not give his personal name, so Christians should be cautious about identifying a present-day individual. The clearest response is to stay rooted in Jesus, test spiritual claims by Scripture, and give worship to God alone.

What Revelation calls him

The title “false prophet” appears most clearly near the end of Revelation. John sees a second beast rising from the earth, one that looks harmless but speaks with the dragon's voice. This figure uses influence on behalf of the first beast and directs the world towards worship of that beast rather than the true God (Revelation 13:11-12).

Later, Revelation identifies this deceiving figure as the false prophet. He is associated with extraordinary signs that mislead those who follow the beast, and he works closely with the beast in rebellion against Christ (Revelation 19:20). The picture is sobering, but its central point is clear: deception can wear a religious-looking face.

And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.

Revelation 13:14 (KJV)

Is he a specific person?

Scripture does not tell us the false prophet's name, nationality, or exact time of appearance. Some Christians understand him as a future individual who will arise during the final events of history. Others read Revelation's imagery as also describing the recurring power of false religion and propaganda that persuades people to give ultimate loyalty to human power.

Faithful Christians have differed on how literally to map Revelation's symbols onto future events. What they can agree on is that the false prophet opposes God by promoting false worship. Trying to attach the title to every public leader, church figure, or news event goes beyond what the text says.

Why his signs matter

The false prophet's deception is not merely bad teaching. Revelation says he uses signs to persuade people, including calling fire down from heaven in the sight of others (Revelation 13:13). Signs can look convincing, which is why spectacle alone is never a safe guide to truth.

Jesus gave the same warning. He said false christs and false prophets would show great signs and wonders in an effort to deceive, if possible, even God's chosen people (Matthew 24:24). A powerful experience, a confident speaker, or an apparent miracle does not replace the need to ask whether a message leads people towards Jesus Christ and faithful obedience to God.

For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.

Matthew 24:24 (KJV)

How to respond without fear

John urges believers not to accept every spiritual claim uncritically, but to test it. The basic test he gives is whether a teaching truly confesses Jesus Christ, rather than replacing or denying him (1 John 4:1-3). Read Scripture in context, pray for wisdom, and stay connected to mature believers who can help you discern difficult claims.

Revelation does not end with deception winning. It says the beast and false prophet are finally judged, while Christ is victorious (Revelation 19:20). So the question is not meant to make you anxious or obsessed with predictions. It invites steady loyalty. Worship God, hold fast to Christ, and don't hand over your conscience to anyone who asks for the devotion that belongs to him alone.

Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
