Salvation and faith

Why is solo Christo important?

← All Bible questions

Solus Christus, often called Christ alone, means that Jesus Christ is the only Saviour and the one mediator who brings people to God. His death and resurrection are sufficient for forgiveness, and no human leader, good work, or religious practice can replace him. This keeps faith rooted in trusting Jesus rather than trying to earn God’s welcome.

Christ alone saves

The phrase is usually Solus Christus, Latin for Christ alone. It does not mean the Father and the Holy Spirit do not matter. Christians worship one God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It means that when it comes to being rescued from sin and reconciled to God, Jesus is not one option among many. He is the Saviour God has given.

Peter said this plainly when speaking about Jesus in Jerusalem: no other name has been given through whom we must be saved (Acts 4:12). Jesus himself described himself as the way to the Father (John 14:6). That can sound confronting in a world that prefers many paths, but it is also a promise. You do not have to find your own way to God. Christ has opened it.

Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Acts 4:12 (KJV)

His work is enough

Christ alone matters because his sacrifice is sufficient. At the cross, Jesus bore sins once, the righteous one giving himself for the unrighteous, so that he could bring us to God (1 Peter 3:18). His resurrection shows that death did not defeat him and that his saving work stands.

This does not make good works worthless. Faith in Christ changes how people live. But works are the fruit of salvation, not the price of admission. Paul tells the believers in Ephesus that salvation is God’s gift, received through faith, rather than something anyone can boast about (Ephesians 2:8-10).

For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

1 Peter 3:18 (KJV)

Jesus is the mediator

A mediator stands between two parties to bring peace. The New Testament says there is one mediator between God and humanity, Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom (1 Timothy 2:5-6). Because of him, believers can draw near to God with confidence rather than fear (Hebrews 4:14-16).

That means you can pray directly to God in Jesus’ name. Pastors, friends, and mature Christians can pray with you and encourage you, which is a real gift. Yet they cannot take Christ’s place. No church leader, spiritual achievement, or family background can do what Jesus has done.

For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

1 Timothy 2:5 (KJV)

A foundation for assurance

If salvation rested mainly on your consistency, assurance would rise and fall with every strong day and every failure. Solus Christus directs your attention back to Jesus. Paul says that people are justified freely by God’s grace through the redemption found in Christ Jesus (Romans 3:24). The basis of hope is his grace, not your performance.

So when you feel unsure, look again at Christ. Read one of the Gospels and notice how he welcomes needy people, confronts sin, forgives, and calls people to follow him. Trusting Christ alone is not passive. It leads to repentance, obedience, and love, but it begins and ends with what he has done for you.
