Salvation rests on God’s grace
The starting point is not how well you have performed, but what God has done in Christ. Salvation is received by grace through faith, and it is described as God’s gift rather than something anyone can achieve by works (Ephesians 2:8; Ephesians 2:9). Christians are called to obey God, but obedience is the fruit of knowing him, not the price of being accepted by him.
Jesus speaks of those who trust him as having already passed from death into life (John 5:24). This means that a believer’s hope is not based on never failing. Christians still need forgiveness and growth. When we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive and cleanse us (1 John 1:9).
And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
Why many Christians are confident
Many Christians believe God will preserve everyone who has truly come to Christ. They point to Jesus’ picture of his sheep held securely in his hand (John 10:28). Paul also expresses confidence that God will complete the good work he began in his people (Philippians 1:6).
This assurance is meant to create grateful trust, not carelessness. A season of weakness, questions, or repeated struggle does not automatically mean God has abandoned you. Nothing in creation can separate God’s people from his love in Christ, Paul says (Romans 8:39).

Why the Bible also gives warnings
Other Christians emphasise the Bible’s warnings against drifting into unbelief. Hebrews urges believers to guard against a heart that turns away from the living God (Hebrews 3:12). Jesus says that continuing in his teaching is the mark of his disciples (John 8:31). These passages matter because faith is a living relationship of trusting and following Jesus, not merely a past moment or a set of words.
Christians who believe salvation can be forfeited understand such warnings as a real possibility of finally rejecting Christ. Christians who believe true believers will persevere often understand the warnings as one of the ways God keeps his people close to him, or as exposing faith that was never genuine. Both views encourage believers to keep trusting Christ.
What to do when you are afraid
Fear about salvation can grow from guilt, doubt, a painful pattern of sin, or a tender conscience. Do not hide from God while you are afraid. Bring the truth to him plainly. A father who came to Jesus admitted that he had faith and doubt at the same time, and asked for help with his unbelief (Mark 9:24). Honest faith can still reach towards Christ.
Confess what is wrong, receive God’s forgiveness, and take one faithful next step. Read about Jesus in the Gospels, pray honestly, and speak with mature Christians who can support you. If you have wandered, remember the returning son whose father welcomed him home when he came back (Luke 15:20). You do not need to make yourself worthy before turning to God. Turn to him today.
