How do I receive forgiveness from God?

← All Bible questions

You receive God’s forgiveness by turning to him honestly, trusting in Jesus Christ, and asking for mercy. Forgiveness is not something you earn by becoming good enough. Jesus gave himself for sinners, and God welcomes those who come to him in faith and repentance (Ephesians 1:7; Mark 1:15).

Come to God honestly

You do not need polished words or a perfect record before coming to God. The Bible is clear that every person has sinned, so forgiveness begins with telling God the truth about what is wrong rather than hiding it (Romans 3:23).

In one of Jesus’ parables, a tax collector simply admitted his need for mercy. He did not defend himself or compare himself with someone else. Jesus said that this man went home accepted by God (Luke 18:13-14). That is a good place to begin: “God, I have sinned. Please have mercy on me.”

And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.

Luke 18:13 (KJV)

Turn from sin and trust Jesus

The Bible calls this response repentance. Repentance means a change of mind and direction, turning from sin towards God. It does not mean you will never struggle again. It means you stop making peace with sin and bring your life to God, asking him to help you walk a new way (Acts 3:19).

Jesus began his public ministry by calling people to repent and believe the gospel, the good news about him (Mark 1:15). Christian forgiveness rests on what Jesus has done, not on how convincingly you can apologise. Through his death, believers have redemption and forgiveness by God’s grace (Ephesians 1:7).

In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

Ephesians 1:7 (KJV)

Confess your sin to him

You can speak to God plainly, naming what you know you have done and asking him to forgive you through Jesus. First John says that when we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive and to cleanse us (1 John 1:9). Confession is not informing God of something he missed. It is agreeing with him about sin and receiving his mercy.

If you are not sure what to pray, keep it simple: “God, I admit I have sinned. I believe Jesus died and rose again. Please forgive me, change me, and help me follow you.” The words themselves are not a magic formula. What matters is coming to God with real faith.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

1 John 1:9 (KJV)

Receive grace, then keep walking

Forgiveness is a gift. Paul writes that people are made right with God freely by his grace through Christ Jesus (Romans 3:24). So when you have turned to Christ, do not keep trying to punish yourself as though his mercy were too small. Thank God, and begin learning to live as someone he has forgiven.

That journey often includes making things right where you can, seeking help when patterns of sin are hard to break, and joining other Christians who can encourage you. Yet your standing with God is not built on a flawless future. For those who are in Christ Jesus, Paul speaks of no condemnation (Romans 8:1). Keep reading the Gospels, bring your questions to God, and take the next faithful step.
