What does the Bible mean by a stronghold?
Paul uses the picture of strongholds while explaining that Christian warfare is not fought with ordinary human weapons. In that passage, he particularly speaks of arguments, proud ideas and thoughts that oppose knowing God. A stronghold can be a lie that has become deeply convincing, such as believing you cannot be forgiven, cannot change, or must return to a sinful refuge (2 Corinthians 10:3-5).
Spiritual evil is not imaginary. The New Testament warns about the devil's schemes (Ephesians 6:11). Yet it is wise not to label every painful struggle demonic. Temptation, woundedness, harmful habits and spiritual opposition can overlap. God sees the whole person, and his help is not limited.
(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
Begin with Christ, not fear
Jesus had genuine authority over evil spirits, and people who witnessed his ministry were struck by it (Mark 1:27). A Christian's confidence is not found in dramatic words, secret knowledge or a ritual. It rests in Christ, who is greater than every spiritual enemy (1 John 4:4).
Bring the matter to Jesus plainly. Ask him to uncover deception, forgive sin and lead you into freedom. James gives a steady pattern: submit yourself to God, resist the devil, and draw near to God (James 4:7-8). Resisting is not panic. It means refusing to agree with evil and choosing again to belong to God.
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Answer lies with truth
Strongholds lose ground when lies are named and brought under Christ's truth. Paul calls believers to a renewed mind rather than a life shaped by the world around them (Romans 12:2). When shame says God has finished with you, return to his mercy. When resentment takes hold, tell God the truth about the hurt and begin the difficult work of forgiveness.
Prayer matters, and so do practical choices. Confess sin to God, make amends where appropriate, remove access to habits that keep pulling you down, and give your attention to what is true, honourable and pure (Philippians 4:8). Change can be gradual. That does not make it unreal. Each faithful step matters.
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Don't fight in isolation
God does not ask believers to stand alone. Paul describes God's armour, including truth, faith, salvation, God's word and prayer (Ephesians 6:13-18). Share what is happening with a mature, trustworthy Christian leader or friend who can listen without spectacle, pray with you and help you stay close to Christ.
Christians differ about when formal deliverance ministry is appropriate and how it should be practised. Any ministry in this area should be calm, biblical, compassionate and centred on Jesus, never coercive or sensational. If trauma, addiction, severe anxiety or disturbing thoughts are part of your struggle, seek help from a qualified health professional alongside pastoral care. God may work through prayer, counselling, medicine and faithful community together.
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
