Trust Jesus, not your own efforts
The Christian faith begins with grace. The Bible says that no one makes themselves right with God through good behaviour, religious activity, or trying harder. God offers salvation because of his love, through what Jesus has done for us.
Jesus took sin and its consequences seriously, yet he welcomed people who came to him in need. His death and resurrection make forgiveness and reconciliation with God possible. Becoming a Christian means placing your confidence in Jesus, rather than in your record or ability to improve yourself.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Turn to God with honest faith
Faith is more than agreeing that Jesus existed. It is personally relying on him. The Bible connects this faith with repentance, which means turning around: acknowledging the ways you have gone your own way and turning towards God. You do not need to have every question answered or have your life completely sorted before coming to him.
You can speak to God plainly. Tell him that you need his mercy, that you believe Jesus died and rose again, and that you want to belong to him and follow him. There is no required wording or perfect prayer. What matters is a genuine heart that comes to God in faith.
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Receive the gift God offers
John describes those who receive Jesus and believe in his name as becoming God's children (John 1:12). This is not merely joining a religion. It is the beginning of a restored relationship with God, marked by forgiveness, belonging, and a new direction for life.
If you are ready, you might pray something like this in your own words: “God, I know I need you. I am sorry for my sin. I trust Jesus and what he has done for me. Please forgive me, make me yours, and help me follow you.” A prayer does not earn salvation, but it can be a meaningful way to express the faith you are placing in Christ.

Take your next steps
Following Jesus is a lifelong relationship and journey, not a one-time attempt at being perfect. Christians still grow, fail, learn, and return to God. When you confess your sins, God is faithful to forgive and cleanse you (1 John 1:9).
Begin reading one of the Gospels, such as John, to get to know Jesus through Scripture. Talk with God honestly each day, and consider connecting with a healthy local church where you can learn, ask questions, worship, and be encouraged. Baptism is also an important public step of identifying with Jesus, as Christians have understood from the earliest church (Acts 2:41-42).
