How tall was Adam?

← All Bible questions

The Bible does not tell us how tall Adam was, so no exact height can be given from Scripture. Later traditions and modern guesses offer different numbers, but they are not biblical facts. Genesis focuses instead on Adam's creation in God's image, his calling, and his relationship with God.

Scripture gives no measurement

Genesis introduces Adam as the first man, formed by God from the dust of the ground and given life by God's breath (Genesis 2:7). Yet it says nothing about his height, weight, appearance, or physical strength. Unlike Goliath, whose height is specifically described, Adam is never measured in the biblical text (1 Samuel 17:4).

That means claims that Adam was extraordinarily tall, whether they suggest a particular number of feet or connect him with later giants, go beyond what Scripture says. It is fine to be curious, but we don't need to turn a silence in the Bible into certainty.

And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Genesis 2:7 (KJV)

Made in God's image

The detail Genesis wants us to notice is far more significant than a physical measurement. God made humanity in his image and gave men and women responsibility within his world (Genesis 1:26-27). Being made in God's image does not mean Adam had God's physical size, since God is spirit (John 4:24). It points to humanity's unique calling to know God, reflect his character, and care for what he made.

Adam's dignity did not depend on being taller, stronger, or more impressive than anyone else. His worth came from the God who made him. That is also the foundation for every person's worth.

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Genesis 1:27 (KJV)

What about Adam's long life?

Genesis does record Adam's age at death, saying that he lived 930 years (Genesis 5:5). Some people assume that such a long lifespan must mean he had an unusual body or exceptional height. But the passage does not make that connection. It gives his years, not his stature.

Christians have offered different explanations for the long lifespans in early Genesis. Whatever view someone takes, Adam's height remains unknown. Scripture simply does not provide the evidence needed to calculate it.

A better question to carry

Adam's story raises bigger questions than his height. Genesis shows a man placed in a garden to serve and guard it, given a real command, and created for fellowship with God (Genesis 2:15-17). It also tells the painful story of Adam's disobedience and its consequences (Genesis 3:6-7).

So the honest answer is simple: we don't know how tall Adam was. But we do know who made him, why human life matters, and why the Bible's story eventually leads to Jesus, whom Paul calls the last Adam (1 Corinthians 15:45). Reading those chapters directly is a good place to keep exploring.

And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.
