God and Jesus

Is God logical?

← All Bible questions

Yes. The Bible presents God as truthful, wise and consistent, not confused or self-contradictory. Yet God is not limited by the small reach of human reasoning, so some of his ways may be beyond us without being irrational.

God is not the author of confusion

Scripture consistently portrays God as a God of order. In the beginning, God creates by speaking, bringing light, land, living creatures and human beings into a purposeful world (Genesis 1:3-5; Genesis 1:24-27). The world is not presented as an accident or a divine whim.

Paul makes the same point while helping a divided Corinthian church bring order to its gatherings. God does not produce confusion, and Christian worship should reflect his peaceful character (1 Corinthians 14:33). That doesn't mean life always feels neat. It means confusion and chaos do not have the final word with God.

For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

1 Corinthians 14:33 (KJV)

God is truthful and consistent

Logic depends on truthfulness. If words can mean anything, or if promises are casually broken, reason collapses. The Bible says God cannot lie (Titus 1:2). His promises and judgements flow from his faithful character, not from changing moods.

God also tells Israel that he does not change (Malachi 3:6). This does not mean he is distant or unresponsive. Scripture shows him hearing prayer and dealing personally with people. It means his goodness, faithfulness and holiness remain steady. We can trust that God will not call evil good one day and condemn it the next.

In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;

Titus 1:2 (KJV)

Jesus reveals God's wisdom

John introduces Jesus as the Word, using the Greek term logos (John 1:1). Logos commonly means word, message or expression, and it can also carry the sense of reason or meaningful order. John is not giving a philosophy lesson. He is saying that God's self-expression has come near in Jesus.

Jesus makes God known in a human life. He teaches with clarity, exposes hypocrisy, welcomes outsiders and gives himself for sinners. In him, God's wisdom is not merely an idea to solve. It is a person to know and follow (John 1:14; Colossians 2:2-3).

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:1 (KJV)

Beyond our understanding, not against reason

There is a difference between something being illogical and something being too large for us to grasp fully. A child may not understand a surgeon's work, but that does not make the surgery nonsense. Paul marvels at the depth of God's wisdom and acknowledges that people cannot fully trace his judgements and ways (Romans 11:33).

God himself says that his thoughts and ways stand higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8-9). That can humble us when we face suffering, unanswered questions or teachings we find difficult. Still, the Bible never asks us to prize nonsense. It calls us to seek wisdom from God, who gives generously (James 1:5).

So bring honest questions. Read the passages around the verses, consider what they say about God's character, and keep returning to Jesus. Faith is not switching off your mind. It is learning to trust the God whose wisdom is deeper than your own.

O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!
