God and Jesus

Could God create a rock so heavy He could not lift it?

← All Bible questions

No, because a rock that an all-powerful God cannot lift is not a possible thing to create. The question joins two opposing ideas, like asking God to make a square circle. Scripture presents God as able to do all that accords with His nature and purposes, while also showing that He cannot lie or act against Himself (Jeremiah 32:17; Titus 1:2).

What the question is really asking

This question is often meant to test whether God can truly be all-powerful. If He can make the rock, perhaps He cannot lift it. If He cannot make it, perhaps there is something He cannot do. It sounds like a trap.

But it depends on a contradiction. A “rock too heavy for the all-powerful God to lift” is not simply a very large rock. It describes an object whose defining feature is that the One with unlimited power lacks the power to move it. The problem lies in the description, not in God’s strength.

The Bible speaks plainly of God as Creator, whose power is beyond anything people can measure. Jeremiah looked at the heavens and earth and recognised that nothing is too difficult for the Lord (Jeremiah 32:17).

Ah Lord God! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee:

Jeremiah 32:17 (KJV)

God’s power is not nonsense

When Christians say God is omnipotent, they mean He has all power. They do not mean God performs logical contradictions or becomes unlike Himself. God cannot lie, not because someone stronger restrains Him, but because falsehood opposes His perfectly faithful character (Titus 1:2).

Paul also says that God cannot deny Himself (2 Timothy 2:13). That is good news. God’s promises do not become unreliable, and His holiness does not shift from one day to the next. His power and His character always belong together.

So God can create mountains, stars, and worlds. He can sustain all things and bring about what no human being could achieve. Yet “creating an unliftable rock for an all-powerful God” is not an extra display of power. It is a string of words that cancels itself out.

What Scripture shows about His power

The Bible does not ask us to picture God solving word puzzles. It points us to what He has done. He made the world by His word (Genesis 1:1), and Jesus taught that what is impossible with people is possible with God (Luke 18:27).

God’s power is also personal, not merely force. Paul prayed that believers would grasp the greatness of the power God showed when He raised Christ from the dead (Ephesians 1:19-20). The resurrection is not an abstract idea. It is God acting to defeat sin and death through Jesus.

That means God’s power is never detached from His wisdom, love, and faithfulness. He does not need to prove Himself by doing what has no meaning. He has already shown His power in creation, in Christ, and in the hope He gives His people.

And he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.

Luke 18:27 (KJV)

A better question to bring to God

Behind this puzzle may be a more personal question: can God really handle what feels impossible in my life? Scripture does not promise that every hard situation will disappear immediately. But it does invite people to come to God for mercy and help when they need it (Hebrews 4:16).

You do not have to solve every philosophical question before trusting Him. Read the passages for yourself and notice the kind of power God reveals: power that creates, saves, raises the dead, and remains faithful. That is power worth knowing.
