Difficult questions

Is there an angel named Gadreel?

← All Bible questions

The Bible does not mention an angel named Gadreel. The name appears in 1 Enoch, an ancient Jewish religious writing, where it is connected with deception and violence. Christians may find such writings historically interesting, but Scripture does not identify Gadreel as an angel, a fallen angel, or the serpent in Eden.

Gadreel is not named in Scripture

Gadreel does not appear anywhere in the KJV Bible. The name is found in 1 Enoch, an ancient Jewish work that contains stories about angels, human rebellion, and the time before the flood. It has shaped some later discussions about fallen angels, but it is not part of the Bible for most Christian traditions.

Jude refers to a prophecy associated with Enoch, showing that traditions connected with Enoch were known among early Christians (Jude 1:14). Yet Jude does not name Gadreel or confirm all the stories found in 1 Enoch. Scripture itself is the standard God has given his people for teaching, correction, and growth (2 Timothy 3:16).

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

2 Timothy 3:16 (KJV)

Scripture names only a few angels

The Bible does give names to a small number of heavenly beings. Michael is described as a chief prince in Daniel's vision and is called an archangel in Jude (Daniel 10:13; Jude 1:9). Gabriel speaks with Daniel, tells Zechariah about the coming birth of John, and is sent to Mary before Jesus' birth (Daniel 8:16; Luke 1:19; Luke 1:26).

Most angels remain unnamed. Their role is to serve God and carry out his purposes, not to gather attention for themselves. When John fell before an angel, the angel stopped him and directed him to worship God alone (Revelation 22:8-9). That gives a helpful perspective when obscure angelic names become fascinating.

And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.

Revelation 22:8-9 (KJV)

Gadreel and the serpent in Eden

Some people connect Gadreel with the serpent who deceived Eve because 1 Enoch links that name with leading humanity astray. But Genesis does not give the serpent a personal name. It simply describes the serpent tempting Eve to distrust God's command (Genesis 3:1-5).

Later, Revelation identifies the ancient serpent as the devil, also called Satan (Revelation 12:9). So the Bible is clear that spiritual evil is real and deceptive. It is not clear, however, that Gadreel is another name for Satan or for any biblical angel. We shouldn't state as certain what Scripture leaves unstated.

And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Revelation 12:9 (KJV)

Let Scripture set the boundaries

There's nothing wrong with being curious about ancient writings. They can help us understand questions people asked in the biblical world. Still, curiosity can become unhelpful when it turns into speculation that distracts from faith, love, and faithful living. Paul warned Timothy about ideas that produced disputes rather than godly growth (1 Timothy 1:4-5).

The Bible's central message is not a catalogue of angel names. It is God's rescue of people through Jesus Christ. Jesus has triumphed over hostile spiritual powers (Colossians 2:15). So there is no need to fear a name from an ancient tradition. Read carefully, ask good questions, and let the clearer teaching of Scripture guide what you believe.
