What does the Bible say about marriage?

← All Bible questions

The Bible presents marriage as a faithful, lifelong covenant in which a man and woman become one flesh, loving and caring for one another under God. It calls spouses to mutual service rather than control, honours sexual faithfulness, and treats singleness as a valuable gift too. Scripture also faces the sorrow of divorce honestly and offers grace to people whose stories are broken or complicated.

A covenant from the beginning

Marriage begins in Genesis, where God says it is not good for the man to be alone. He makes the woman and brings her to the man, and the passage then describes a new family bond: leaving parents, holding fast to one another, and becoming one flesh (Genesis 2:18, 22, 24). Marriage is more than a private feeling. It joins two lives in a faithful covenant.

Jesus points back to this beginning when people ask him about divorce. He speaks of marriage as a union God joins together, not something to set aside casually (Matthew 19:4-6). That does not mean marriage is painless or simple. It does mean that faithfulness matters deeply.

Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

Genesis 2:24 (KJV)

Love serves, not controls

The Bible does not picture a healthy marriage as one person dominating another. Paul tells believers in Ephesus to yield to one another because of their shared devotion to Christ (Ephesians 5:21). He then calls husbands to love with the costly, self-giving care Christ shows his church (Ephesians 5:25).

That makes marriage love very practical. It listens before reacting, tells the truth with kindness, shares burdens, keeps promises, and seeks the other person's good. Paul's description of love is a searching guide: it is patient and kind, rejects pride and selfishness, and keeps going through hardship (1 Corinthians 13:4-7).

Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

Ephesians 5:25 (KJV)

Faithfulness includes our bodies

Scripture connects sexual intimacy with the marriage covenant. The one-flesh language of Genesis shows that bodies and promises belong together, rather than being casual or disposable (Genesis 2:24). Hebrews urges married people to honour marriage and protect sexual faithfulness (Hebrews 13:4).

This is not meant to heap shame on anyone. If your story includes regret, sexual sin, or betrayal, God's mercy is not closed to you. Jesus met a woman caught in public shame with both compassion and a call to leave sin behind (John 8:10-11). Grace tells the truth, then opens a way forward.

Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.

Hebrews 13:4 (KJV)

Marriage is a gift, not a measure of worth

Marriage is good, but it is not the only faithful Christian calling. Paul, who was single, says both marriage and singleness are gifts from God (1 Corinthians 7:7). He also notes that unmarried people may have particular freedom to focus on serving the Lord (1 Corinthians 7:32-35). A single, widowed, or divorced person is not a lesser Christian.

The Bible takes divorce seriously because broken promises wound people. Jesus names God's intention for lifelong faithfulness, while recognising the hard-heartedness that damages relationships and addressing sexual unfaithfulness (Matthew 19:8-9). Christians do not all apply these passages in exactly the same way in complex cases. Where there is abuse, coercion, or danger, pursuing safety and seeking wise support are not failures of faith.

Paul says marriage can point to Christ's faithful love for his people (Ephesians 5:31-33). So a strong marriage is not one that looks perfect from outside. It is two imperfect people learning to receive grace and offer it, day by day.
