What is Sozo prayer?

← All Bible questions

Sozo prayer is a modern prayer ministry approach that seeks to help people bring painful memories, false beliefs, and difficult relationships before God for healing and freedom. It often includes quiet listening, forgiveness, and asking God for truth. The Bible does not set out a fixed process called Sozo prayer, so it is wise to approach it with Scripture, humility, and trusted pastoral care.

What does “Sozo” mean?

Sozo is a Greek word used in the New Testament. Depending on its setting, it can refer to being saved, healed, made well, or delivered. When Jesus spoke to the woman who had been healed after long-term bleeding, the Greek word behind the KJV phrase “made thee whole” is sozo (Mark 5:34). It can point to God’s rescuing and restoring work.

Modern Sozo prayer ministries use this word for prayer focused on emotional and spiritual healing. The name reflects a biblical hope that God cares for people in their suffering. Still, Scripture does not describe a set ministry method called Sozo prayer.

And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.

Mark 5:34 (KJV)

What happens in a Sozo session?

Practices differ between churches and ministries. A prayer minister may invite someone to speak honestly with God about a painful memory, fear, relationship, or repeated belief about themselves. They may ask what the person senses God drawing to mind, then pray for comfort, forgiveness, truth, and freedom.

Some of this resembles other forms of Christian prayer and pastoral care. Believers can bring their needs to God, ask for wisdom, and help carry one another’s burdens (Philippians 4:6-7; James 1:5; Galatians 6:2). A prayer conversation should never force someone to share private experiences or make them feel they must have a dramatic emotional response.

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

James 1:5 (KJV)

Is Sozo prayer biblical?

Several themes often found in Sozo prayer are plainly biblical. Jesus invites weary and burdened people to come to him (Matthew 11:28). Christians are called to forgive others in light of God’s forgiveness (Ephesians 4:32), and the church is invited to pray for those who are sick or suffering (James 5:14-16).

But no experience in prayer is equal to Scripture. Mental pictures, strong impressions, or another person’s words may be meaningful, but they can also be misunderstood. The New Testament tells Christians to test spiritual claims rather than accepting every message uncritically (1 John 4:1).

Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

1 John 4:1 (KJV)

How can you approach it wisely?

If you are considering Sozo prayer, seek mature and trustworthy leaders who respect boundaries, protect appropriate confidentiality, and welcome honest questions. Healthy prayer ministry keeps Jesus and Scripture at the centre. It does not promise instant healing, treat intense experiences as proof of faith, or blame someone when healing takes time.

You can also pray simply. Tell God what hurts, ask for wisdom, and read Scripture for yourself. Speak with a wise pastor or trusted Christian friend. If trauma, abuse, anxiety, or serious mental health struggles are involved, prayer can sit alongside support from a qualified counsellor or health professional. You do not have to carry heavy things alone.
