A guide through Paul’s letter
The Romans Road is not a title Paul gave to his letter. Christians later used the name for a group of verses that lead readers through the main message of Romans. Paul wrote to Christians in Rome about God’s righteousness, the reality of sin, Jesus’ saving work, and the life of faith.
Many versions of the Romans Road begin with Romans 3:23. Paul says that every person has sinned and falls short of God’s glory. That puts all of us on level ground. No one can point to their own goodness as the reason God should accept them, yet no one is too broken to receive his mercy.
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
The problem and the gift
Romans 6:23 explains why sin matters. Sin leads to death, because it separates people from the God who gives life. But Paul does not leave the reader with bad news. He sets death beside God’s free gift of eternal life in Christ Jesus.
That word “gift” matters. Salvation is not wages paid to someone who has finally done enough. It comes from God’s grace. The Romans Road helps people see both their need and God’s generosity.
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Christ acted first
Romans 5:8 brings the heart of the message into focus. God showed his love by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. He did not wait for people to tidy up their lives before moving towards them.
The cross shows that sin is serious, but it also shows the depth of God’s love. Jesus’ death was not simply an example of kindness. It is God’s saving action for people who cannot rescue themselves.
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Responding in faith
The final steps often include Romans 10:9-10 and Romans 10:13. Paul connects salvation with trusting that God raised Jesus from the dead and openly confessing Jesus as Lord. This is more than saying religious words. It is placing your confidence and allegiance in the living Christ.
Calling on the Lord is open to anyone. You do not need a perfect past, special knowledge, or the right kind of family. You can come honestly, admit your need, trust Jesus, and ask him to lead your life.
Still, the Romans Road is a starting point, not the whole journey. Faith in Jesus leads into a new life of offering ourselves to God and having our minds renewed, as Paul describes in Romans 12:1-2. Read these verses in Romans for yourself, and keep discovering who Jesus is.
