Church and practice

Which church is the true church?

← All Bible questions

The true church is not simply one modern denomination or building. In the New Testament, it is the whole people of God who belong to Jesus Christ through faith, with Christ himself as their foundation and head. A healthy local church will hold to the gospel, seek to obey Scripture, love one another, and help people grow as disciples of Jesus.

Jesus is the centre

The Bible speaks of the church first as people, not a brand name, country, or particular style of worship. Paul describes believers as one body, joined to Christ and to each other by the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:12-13). He also says there is one body and one Lord, even though Christians come from many places and backgrounds (Ephesians 4:4-6).

That means no present-day denomination can honestly claim that every genuine Christian belongs only to them. The New Testament does name local congregations, such as the believers at Philippi, but it does not name today's denominations as the only true church (Philippians 1:1). Christ, not a human leader or institution, is the church's foundation (1 Corinthians 3:11).

For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 3:11 (KJV)

Look for the gospel

A church should clearly teach the good news that Jesus died for our sins, rose again, and saves people by his grace. Paul treated this message as essential, not optional, and warned the Galatians not to accept a different gospel (1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Galatians 1:8-9).

This does not mean every church must share the same music, building, leadership structure, or traditions. Faithful Christians have differed over matters such as baptism, communion, and church government. But a church that replaces trust in Christ with human achievement, or denies who Jesus is and what he has done, has moved away from the apostolic gospel.

For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

1 Corinthians 15:3-4 (KJV)

Look for Jesus-shaped fruit

Jesus said that his followers would be recognised by their love for one another (John 13:35). Love is more than friendliness at the door. It includes truthfulness, patience, care for the weak, forgiveness, and a willingness to serve rather than control people.

No congregation gets this right perfectly. The church in Corinth had serious divisions and moral failures, yet Paul still called them to turn back to Christ and live as his people (1 Corinthians 1:10; 1 Corinthians 6:9-11). So don't look for a flawless church. Look for one that takes sin seriously, receives grace gratefully, and is willing to be corrected by God's word.

Choose a place to grow

If you are looking for a church, listen carefully to what is taught. Read the relevant Bible passages for yourself, as the Bereans did when they examined Paul's teaching (Acts 17:11). Ask whether Jesus is central, whether Scripture is opened honestly, and whether leaders show humility and integrity.

It also helps to notice how people are treated, especially those who are new, poor, wounded, or different. A local church should encourage believers to meet together, stir one another towards love, and help each other endure in faith (Hebrews 10:24-25). Visit, ask questions, and give it time. The true church belongs to Jesus, and he is still gathering his people.

By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
