Difficult questions

Who / What is the angel of the Lord?

← All Bible questions

The angel of the Lord is a mysterious messenger who appears at key moments in the Old Testament. Sometimes this angel speaks and acts with God’s own authority, leading many Christians to see these appearances as the pre-incarnate Christ. Others understand the figure as a uniquely authorised angel who represents God so fully that he speaks in God’s name. Scripture leaves some mystery, but it consistently shows God drawing near to help, guide and save.

A messenger with an unusual role

The word angel means messenger. In many Bible passages, angels are created servants who carry out God’s work. But the angel of the Lord often seems different. This figure does not merely deliver a message, but speaks with divine authority and receives a response that people give to God.

When Hagar fled into the wilderness, the angel of the Lord found her, spoke personally about her future, and promised that her descendants would become numerous. Hagar then recognised that God had seen her in her distress. The scene is tender as well as mysterious. God was not distant from an abused and frightened woman in the desert (Genesis 16:10-13).

And she called the name of the Lord that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?

Genesis 16:13 (KJV)

Why the passages can feel confusing

At the burning bush, the angel of the Lord appears in the flame, yet the passage soon says that God called to Moses from the bush. The text moves between the angel’s appearance and God’s own voice without explaining every detail for us (Exodus 3:2, Exodus 3:4).

A similar moment occurs with Samson’s parents. Manoah and his wife meet the angel of the Lord, then realise they have encountered someone bound up with God’s own presence. Yet the angel’s name remains beyond their grasp (Judges 13:18, Judges 13:22). These stories invite reverence rather than easy certainty.

And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.

Exodus 3:2 (KJV)

Is this Jesus before Bethlehem?

Many Christians believe the angel of the Lord is the Son of God appearing before he took human flesh in Jesus. They point to occasions where the angel speaks as God, forgives or makes promises that belong to God, and is treated as divine. On this view, these are glimpses of Christ before his birth in Bethlehem.

Other Christians are more cautious. They note that a royal messenger could speak in the name and authority of the one who sent him. They also point out that in Zechariah the angel of the Lord speaks to the Lord, which shows a distinction between them (Zechariah 1:12). So it is wise not to claim more than the Bible clearly says.

Both views take the passages seriously. The central truth does not change: the Lord sees his people, hears their cries, and acts faithfully in their lives.

How to read these appearances

Pay attention to what the angel says and does in each individual story. Sometimes Scripture simply means an angel sent by God. At other times, the angel of the Lord is described in language that closely connects him with God himself. Context matters.

You do not need to solve every detail before receiving the comfort these passages offer. Hagar learned that she was seen. Moses learned that God had heard Israel’s suffering. Manoah’s family learned that God could bring hope where they had known disappointment. The mystery points beyond itself to God’s holy, personal care (Genesis 16:13, Exodus 3:4, Judges 13:22).

Then the angel of the Lord answered and said, O Lord of hosts, how long wilt thou not have mercy on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah, against which thou hast had indignation these threescore and ten years?

Zechariah 1:12 (KJV)
