God’s power has no rival
The Bible presents God as the Creator and ruler of all things. When Job finally sees something of God’s wisdom and greatness, he recognises that no purpose of God can be prevented (Job 42:2). Jesus likewise tells his disciples that what people cannot accomplish is possible with God (Matthew 19:26).
That doesn’t mean God is merely stronger than everyone else. His power is not limited by human resources, opposition, or impossible circumstances. The angel Gabriel told Mary that no word from God would fail, as God announced the birth of Jesus through her (Luke 1:37).
I know that thou canst do every thing, and that no thought can be withholden from thee.
God cannot lie
Scripture also speaks plainly about things God cannot do. Paul says that God cannot lie (Titus 1:2), and Hebrews ties Christian hope to God’s unchanging promise and character (Hebrews 6:18). God never bends the truth, breaks a promise, or manipulates people with deception.
This is good news, not a limit that makes God smaller. If God could lie, his promises would offer no solid ground. Because he is faithful, people can trust his words even when life feels uncertain.
In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;
God will not act against his own nature
God cannot be tempted by evil, and he does not tempt anyone to do evil (James 1:13). He is holy, which means evil is not a hidden possibility within him. His goodness is not something he has to choose afresh each morning. It belongs to who he is.
Paul makes a similar point when he says that even human unfaithfulness does not make God unfaithful, because God cannot deny himself (2 Timothy 2:13). God will always be God: just, true, merciful, and faithful. His power and his character never pull in opposite directions.
What about impossible questions?
People sometimes ask whether God can make a square circle, or create a stone too heavy for him to lift. These sound like tests of power, but they join words that cancel each other out. A square circle is not a difficult object waiting to be made. It is not an object at all.
The Bible’s claim is not that God performs nonsense. It is that nothing outside God can defeat his purposes, and nothing good that he has promised is beyond his ability. When facing a real need, bring it honestly to him. Read the promises of Scripture in their setting, pray, and trust that God’s wise power is never separated from his good character (Romans 8:28).
