What does it mean that God is omnipotent?

← All Bible questions

God being omnipotent means he has unlimited power and can accomplish every purpose that fits with his holy, truthful nature. Nothing in creation can overpower him or prevent his plans from standing. His power is not random force, it is the dependable strength of the God who is wise, good, and faithful.

God has power over all creation

Omnipotent is not a Bible word, but it expresses a clear biblical truth: God is all-powerful. He made the heavens, the earth, and every living thing. Jeremiah looked at a nation facing disaster and confessed that nothing was too difficult for the Lord (Jeremiah 32:17).

That does not mean God merely has more power than anyone else. His power is in a different category. Human strength runs out. Nations rise and fall. Even the forces that terrify us, illness, storms, death, and evil, are never beyond God's rule.

I know that thou canst do every thing, and that no thought can be withholden from thee.

Job 42:2 (KJV)

Nothing can defeat his purpose

When Job finally encountered God, he recognised that no plan of God could be stopped (Job 42:2). This is one reason God's power brings comfort. The world is not held together by luck, nor is your life finally at the mercy of the strongest person in the room.

Jesus made this point when his disciples wondered who could be saved. What people cannot accomplish by their own effort is possible with God (Matthew 19:26). God's power reaches into places where human resources, wisdom, and willpower fail.

But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

Matthew 19:26 (KJV)

God's power agrees with his character

Sometimes people ask whether an all-powerful God can do absolutely anything, including things that are false or self-contradictory. Scripture answers by showing that God's power is never separated from who he is. God cannot lie, because he is truthful (Titus 1:2). He cannot deny himself, because he remains faithful to his own character (2 Timothy 2:13).

So omnipotence does not mean God acts cruelly, breaks promises, or makes truth false. Those are not limits imposed on him by something stronger. They describe the perfection of his nature. His power is always the power of the holy and faithful God.

A reason for trust, not easy answers

Knowing God is omnipotent does not make every painful question simple. Faithful people still pray for healing and grieve losses. Paul himself learned that God's strength could be displayed in weakness, rather than through the removal of every hardship (2 Corinthians 12:9).

Still, God's power means suffering and sin do not have the last word. The God who promised Abraham and Sarah a son in their old age asked whether anything was too hard for him (Genesis 18:14). Bring him the situation that feels immovable. Read these passages for yourself, pray honestly, and remember that his strength is joined to his love and faithfulness.

Is any thing too hard for the Lord? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.
